While neither of us have been to the US embassy in a while, it is clear that the goals and strategies that US diplomats are relying on have shifted drastically in the past few weeks. While this is mostly bad news and damage control, the opportunity to create a more federal form of governance in Afghanistan create something of a silver lining. Certainly, however, there are numerous hurdles that still need to be crossed before we get to that point and given other events in the Middle East John Kerry must not be looking forward to return trips to Kabul.
